MNRE Invites Proposals for Innovative Rooftop Solar Projects Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme, Last Date is July 29, 2025

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a call for proposals under the Innovative Projects component of the flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This initiative is part of the Government of India’s ambitious plan to scale up rooftop solar installations across residential households, aiming to add significant clean energy capacity by 2026–27.

With an allocated budget of ₹75,021 crore, the scheme aims to make rooftop solar power accessible and affordable for citizens, while accelerating India’s green energy transition. The Innovative Projects segment seeks to foster cutting-edge technologies and novel business models in rooftop solar deployment.

    Key Areas of Focus

The MNRE is looking for proposals from startups, research institutions, industry players, and NGOs that focus on areas such as blockchain-enabled peer-to-peer energy trading, integration of rooftop solar with electric vehicle charging, smart building materials with solar functionality, grid-responsive solar-plus-storage solutions, and innovative financing mechanisms.

Additionally, the scheme encourages the development of digital platforms to aid utilities in managing distributed rooftop solar assets and facilitating smoother grid integration.

    Funding and Support

Projects approved under this component will receive financial assistance of up to 60% of the total project cost, capped at ₹30 crore per project. The MNRE will release grants in tranches linked to project milestones, with initial disbursement allowing up to 50% of the grant for procurement of equipment and infrastructure.

The initiative supports a maximum project duration of 18 months, providing adequate time for demonstration, implementation, and validation of innovative solar technologies and business models.

    Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants include accredited academic institutions, DPIIT-recognized startups, private and public sector companies, NGOs, and student groups collaborating with research bodies.

    Application Process

Interested parties must submit detailed project proposals online via the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) portal by July 29, 2025. Proposals should include technical details, implementation plans, budgets, and team credentials.

Speaking on the launch, an MNRE official stated, “The Innovative Projects component under PM Surya Ghar is a vital step to accelerate rooftop solar adoption and integrate emerging technologies that will transform the energy landscape. We invite innovators to join hands in realizing India’s clean energy ambitions.”

This program complements India’s broader renewable energy targets and reinforces the government’s commitment to sustainable development by empowering citizens with clean, reliable, and affordable solar power.
