Delhi is accelerating its transformation into a sustainable metropolis with the introduction of an ambitious Electric Vehicle (EV) policy, spearheaded by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. This initiative aims to combat the city’s persistent air pollution and establish Delhi as a leader in green mobility.
The Delhi government is offering financial incentives to residents to promote the purchase of electric vehicles. These subsidies are part of a comprehensive strategy to make EVs more accessible to the public. In a significant move, Delhi plans to introduce over 4,000 electric buses by the end of the year. This expansion is part of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVi) initiative, which aims to enhance last-mile connectivity and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based transportation.
To support the growing number of EVs, the government is investing in the development of charging and battery swapping stations. The goal is to establish low-cost, fast-charging stations every five kilometers, particularly along the Outer Ring Road, to alleviate range anxiety among EV users.
The revamped EV policy is expected to generate at least 20,000 jobs through the expansion of charging infrastructure and battery swapping facilities. This move aligns with the government’s broader objective of boosting employment and economic growth. In addition to promoting electric vehicles, the government is deploying 1,000 water sprinklers and integrated machines across all 70 Assembly constituencies to combat dust pollution and improve air quality.
Delhi’s commitment to a sustainable future is evident in its comprehensive approach to electric mobility. With the introduction of subsidies, expansion of electric buses, development of charging infrastructure, and job creation, the city is poised to lead the way in green transportation. As the government continues to implement these initiatives, Delhi is set to become a model for other cities aiming to transition to cleaner, more sustainable modes of transport.
